De Niro in uno schizzo

Sketch in graphite HB and 2B on #FABRIANO paper
29,7x21 cm. Rome, 11th April 2018.

🇬🇧 I am working with chiaroscuro lately, because I'd like to portray this way some musicians of Rock. In the meantime, it happens to me to see on a Facebook Page about cinema some portraits in B/W pictures.
I like drawing expressive faces, not matters whether old or young, it is sufficient that they have got a light within and they catch my attention: those faces go on telling their story, even after having finished my portrait.
I sketched Robert De Niro by hand, without any frame, just for training my hand and eyes. It is not an artwork, but I like the result as well, because I feel to have captured the essence.
I started the drawing in wide lines which designed the arch of his eyebrows, nose and the line under his eyes. Thence, I began to draw his look, the shadows and at last, the lines over his skin. I passed from the HB pencil to the 2B, to add more shadows.
What has always impressed me about De Niro is how he can express all the shades of emotions, from fierceness to total vulnerability. As audience, we often choose only one 'mask' and forget all the rest, deceiving ourselves to understand the actor.
In the job of actor, the qualitative level often doesn't take interest. On my point, I admire De Niro's courage and artistic longevity. Risk is essential for an actor, though popular as he is: also in some  average movie, as supporting actor, De Niro challenged trying to tell life, beyond prejudice that celebrity may gives. There is no decade without one of his characters and even if now somebody is going to know De Niro through some ordinary movie, that would be always a starting point to learn about his masterpiece interpretations.
He has inspired whole generations of actors, thanks to Taxi Driver or Raging Bull by Scorsese, Novecento by Bernardo Bertolucci, and he is unforgettable when he played Al Capone in The Untouchables by De Palma. Yet, I was amazed watching at his most fragile characters, such as in Awakenings next to Robin Williams, where they together made everything bright; and also, when he played Stanley, a simple man who released himself by learning to read and write with the help from his friend Iris, interpreted by Jane Fonda, in Stanley & Iris by Ritt; why we should ignore his work in Marvin's Room, where the champion of fierceness played the role of a fuzzy but honest doctor, next to Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep and a young Leonardo Di Caprio. Even the simple character in The Intern by Nancy Meyers allowed him to tell a story from the point of view of a mature man, who is looking for a new start with dignity.

That's what I would like to sketch in few lines through Robert De Niro's eyes. 😉
